7 Best SciFi Books for Men

My schedule allows for significant free time and since high school I’ve filled that schedule with a voracious appetite for books.

It started with churning through the Modern Library’s Top 100 Books of All Time list and progressed to an ever-expanding catalog spanning a century and several genres. I devour the occasional business, self-help book, nonfiction or best-seller, but my two favorite genres are SciFi (futurist and dystopian) and Epics (books over 800 pages).

I’ve read so many SciFi books and Epics that their plots start to merge together in my mind. Earlier this year, I spent weeks obsessively trying to rediscover a book I’d read about an artificial intelligence computer named James and a programmer who runs a biological nanobot company, only to discover that it was, in fact, two separate books. My mind had twisted the plots together into a new story, hence the difficulty finding the title of the book.

But after reading several hundred SciFi books, several have stood out as the best and most memorable. Here are my top picks for best SciFi books for men.

2. Spin Trilogy

One night while stargazing, three children witness all the stars simultaneously disappear. An opaque black “spin membrane” has been placed around Earth. The membrane has slowed time so that approximately 100 million years pass on the outside for every year within. A simulated sun on the inside of the membrane allows for a largely normal life cycle to continue. However, the passage of time outside the membrane means that all life on earth will end in a few decades when the sun’s expansion makes that region of the solar system uninhabitable.

When the latest planet-wide update is delivered with the intention of making everyone as smart as James Keats, something goes wrong and everyone on the planet dies instantly. Returning from a mission to Mars, where work was interrupted by a system-wide blackout, James and his small crew of scientists stumble upon a tragedy of untold proportions and must search for the cause of the deaths while evading a now-hostile system that they discover has been turned against its human creators.
