During our first pregnancy, before our 20 week ultrasound, James and I had chosen both a boy’s name and a girl’s name. We had agreed on the first name for a girl, but never decided on a middle name. Once we found out we were having a boy, the middle name for a girl didn’t matter.
And the same goes with our second pregnancy: We found out we were having a boy before agreeing on a middle name again.
But when we found out we are having a girl for our third pregnancy, I knew it was time to reach an agreement on a middle name.
Luckily, we have agreed on the first name from the get-go. We have loved the name Scarlett ever since deciding to start a family. It is strong, it is Southern and it is feminine. Though we both absolutely love Gone with the Wind, James’ insistence on making her middle name “O” was not met with a warm response from me. Can you imagine: Scarlett O Hobson? Poor girl.
Instead, I’ve been set on Scarlett Grace since before we found out Beau was a boy. James Michael is James’ namesake, and as much as I was determined to have the upper hand naming our second baby, James’ suggestion of Beau won me over instantly.
So, I think it’s finally my turn to put my foot down and squelch these “O” daydreams. I told him he could call her that affectionately, as a nickname. But “O” will not make it on her birth certificate. After all, I’m trying to give this little girl a fighting chance with three boys in the house.
It is still so hard for me to wrap my head around the idea of having a little girl with so much surrounding testosterone. But I do love the fact that she’ll have two older brothers to look out for her as she’s growing up. The Rowdy boys are as ready for you as they’ll ever be, little Scarlett.
