Like most people, Memorial Day traditionally marks the start of summer to me. I think of cookouts and watermelon and swim time. And this week, we’re at the beach with my extended family, which makes Memorial Day an even greater signal to summer.
But each year, I try to take a few minutes to reflect on the real meaning of the holiday. Like Christmas, Memorial Day is a great day of celebration and festivities, but it’s important to remember that it came at a great sacrifice. As I’m soaking up time with my family today, I’m also reflecting on those who served our great country and made the ultimate sacrifice. My dad served in Vietnam and my grandfather served in World War II, and I’m very aware that the only reason I’m here is because they made it back, even though some of their comrades did not. So today, I’m beyond grateful for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Beach Time
We arrived at Hilton Head Island, S.C., Saturday afternoon and quickly made our way down to the beach to enjoy an afternoon of sunshine. Rain is forecast most of the week, but I’m hoping we can eek out a few half days of beach time. In the past 36 hours, we’ve jumped waves, hunted for (and found) sharks teeth, swam in the pool, pedaled beach cruisers and indulged in healthy home-cooked meals. My ideal way to vacation—except for being 30 weeks pregnant, because I would love to sip on a margarita beachside!
