A Day in the Life: Pregnant with Two Toddlers

First off, let me just say that typing out that title kills me. I mean, I know it’s accurate, but categorizing Beau as a toddler almost takes my breath away. Until I realize that I’m about to have a newborn and life will be slightly more manageable with a newborn and two toddlers than a newborn + baby + toddler.

I love reading other bloggers’ “Day in the Life” posts. It’s interesting to see just how similar and how different our lives are. I’m also hoping to post these types of daily glimpses every few months so that I can look back one day and marvel at the day-to-day nuances in the Hobson household. I never plan these posts out ahead of time; basically, I just wake up and think I should record a rough timeline and take lots of pics so I can post a “Day in the Life” recap.

My last post like this was nearly four months ago, and looking back, it seems much more productive in the household maintenance area, but maybe I can blame the lack of chores from last Friday on it being just that, a Friday. Can’t stay-at-home moms mess around on Fridays as much as professionals do? 🙂

6:30 a.m. — Beau wakes up earlier than normal, but because he was up half the night dealing with crazy congestion on top of cutting a molar, I assume there’s no going back to sleep for my poor little guy. I head downstairs with him and turn on the news, thinking that I can rock him while we watch for a few minutes before James Michael wakes up. But no, as soon as I sit down Beau starts climbing all over me and I realize that somehow, despite the lack of sleep last night, he’s rearing to go.

6:45 a.m. — JM is up and Beau and I greet him in his room. Beau goes straight in for the hug; JM asks him for another, but ‘Mr. Beau’ has moved on to jumping on JM’s twin bed. We all head downstairs, where I feed the boys breakfast, get them dressed, then let them play. I do my best to referee them while unloading the dishwasher and cleaning up the kitchen.

8 a.m. — At this point, Beau is tired and starting to get fussy so I put him down for a nap and break out the Playdoh for JM.

8:15 a.m. — James gets home from the gym. (He woke up at 4:45 a.m. to eat a full breakfast before running his 6 a.m. bootcamp and 7 a.m. CrossFit classes.) He helps JM cook a Playdoh breakfast while I eat my breakfast. Meanwhile, Beau is still making noise in his crib.

8:30 a.m. — Beau is crying and I realize this early nap thing isn’t working. I bring him downstairs and let James entertain the boys while I shower and put on real clothes (anything other than workout gear) and actual makeup. I hear lots of crazy shenanigans while I’m upstairs, but come down to find this sweet scene.

9:15 a.m. — I pack up the car with the boys and a snack and food donation for the neighborhood costume party later that morning. Then we drive to the nearby barber.

9:30 a.m. — JM acts like such a big boy getting his haircut (maybe because he knows his prize is a sucker from the barber!) All the while, Beau constantly tries to climb up in to JM’s chair and all the other chairs at the barber. He also tries to pull down all the barber utensils on all the counters, despite the plethora of fun toys nearby.

10 a.m. — We arrive at the neighborhood costume party. The boys have a blast eating special snacks they never normally get and playing with all the other kids–make that, all the other boys. At one point I looked around the clubhouse and saw the girls calmly completing crafts at a table, while all the boys were running around unrolling toilet paper. It was hilarious.

11:40 a.m. — We pack up and leave the party, and Beau falls asleep on the 3 minute drive home, so I transfer him to his crib. I fix a quick lunch for JM and am shocked to see the state of my living room. Somehow, I must have missed the mess that James and the boys made this morning as I was trying to get out the door. So you can guess who is stuck cleaning it up.

12:05 p.m. — James reads JM a couple books before his nap, and I take a few minutes to put away some clean laundry and then pack the boys clothes for the weekend. We were supposed to go to Augusta to visit James’ family. (Turns out, only James and JM went because Beau got sick, but I had no idea at this point.)

homemade chinese food

12:30 p.m. — I eat lunch (home-cooked chinese food, don’t judge) while typing up a quick post (What am I in for?) then chat with James for a bit, mostly about gym stuff.

1:15 p.m. — Beau wakes up…he’s very precise about taking a 1.5 hour nap. I feed him lunch, and he thanks me by rubbing his strawberry-tinged hands all over his head.

beau bath 15 months

2:15 p.m. — I realize that if Beau is going to get a bath at all today, it’s got to be now because I’m watching a friend’s two-year-old from 5:30-7 p.m. tonight so she can workout. Luckily, Beau loves baths…a little too much from the slippery state of my bathroom floor.

christmas packages

2:40 p.m. — After bath, we play in the playroom a bit, help Dad break down boxes (yay, the two big packages are three-fourths of the Christmas presents I need to order this year. One less thing to worry about before Scarlett gets here) then play out on the back deck. I do try to make sure my kids look cute and clean a few days a week, mostly for school and church. Today was not one of those days. Beau is obviously clean, but the outfit…just be happy he’s wearing clothes at all 🙂

3:40 p.m. — After a 3+ hour nap, JM wakes up and I feed the boys a snack and pickup the downstairs a bit.

hospitality study

4 p.m. — We head out to the fenced-in backyard for the afternoon, and I actually sit in a deck chair for a few minutes and research a couple bible studies. I decide on the Biblical Hospitality study from She Reads Truth. Hospitality is one of my spiritual gifts so I’m excited to learn more.

5:30 p.m. — The boys’ two-year-old playmate arrives and the kids play downstairs. They play pretty well together, but Beau starts getting really fussy, which makes sense since he took an earlier nap. I feed the boys dinner, but Beau’s appetite isn’t like it usually is. Not good.

6:30 p.m. — I get Beau ready for an early bedtime, and I realize he feels a little warm. I check his temperature and it’s 101.5. There goes our weekend plans 🙂

7 p.m. — Our evening playmate is picked up by her Mommy. I give Beau some Tylenol before putting him to bed and call James’ mom to let her know Beau and I won’t be coming to visit.

7:30 p.m. — I start getting JM ready for bed…brush teeth, put on pjs, read books.

7:45 p.m. — Beau wakes up, and after a few attempts at putting him back down, I realize he’s not going back to sleep anytime soon. I try to read them both a book, but that wasn’t happening with Beau’s crazy spurt of energy. I let the boys play downstairs for a while.

8:15 p.m. — James gets home early (hey, 20 minutes counts!) and plays with the boys to help tire them out since Mama doesn’t wrestle in her 8-month-pregnant state. I put Beau back to bed and James reads JM a couple books while I start making dinner and clean up the kitchen.

fish and veggies dinner

9 p.m. — While watching Shark Tank, we eat dinner. Nothing special, just sauteed fish (which got stuck to the pan) and roasted veggies. I do indulge in my favorite pseudo-healthy dessert: peanut butter, dark chocolate chips and coconut butter.

10 p.m. — We get ready for bed and read for a while. I’m currently halfway through Gone Girl, and I’m not sure what to say about it so far. It’s much darker than what I normally read, but I’m enjoying it so far.

10:20 p.m. — Lights out. (Beau wakes up again 5 more times that night, but I’m just going to pretend that sickness is behind us at this point!)
