Craving Soda? Try This

I’m just popping in quickly to share a recipe so simple it shouldn’t be called a recipe.

A few times a year, I get a craving for soda. I’m not a big Coke fan (too fizzy), but I tend to gravitate toward Sunkist, Sprite or even Cheerwine.

Yesterday, I was picking up a few essentials from the grocery store (coffee and spaghetti squash), and got a huge craving for a soda. Maybe it’s because I had just finished up 25 minutes on the elliptical and was thirsty. Who knows? But I ALMOST broke down and bought some soda, because pregnancy cravings are real. But then I was like, once I drink one of those mini cans, what happens to the rest? Do my kids find them and want to drink them (eek!) or do I remember every day that I have soda left in the pantry until I drink one a day and practically effect a soda addiction (double eek!).

I’m happy to report that my practical reasoning won out and I did not purchase any soda. (I can guarantee you the end result would have been different if I was craving chocolate). But despite my willpower and determination, my practical reasoning did nothing to quench my craving.

So when I got home, I was going to opt for the next best thing to a soda–similar but actually healthy: kombucha. And though we’d had our fridge stocked with kombucha for weeks, all of a sudden we were out of it.

But I did spy a jug of juice in the fridge, and that’s when I decided on homemade soda. Some may call it a mocktail, but that’s the last thing I want my kids going around saying when someone asks what they want to drink!

I even let my kids jump in on the taste-testing business. They now officially love Mama’s homemade soda! They have no idea it’s basically watered down fizzy juice.

I have tried to drink La Croix when I get a craving, but I just can’t bring myself to finish a can of it without any sweetness to it. I’d rather just have regular water.

What about you? Do you like soda? Kombucha? La Croix? Homemade soda?
