Have you ever gotten that warm, fuzzy feeling inside? You know, the one that has you blissfully smiling at the mention of a certain name? That ‘can’t live without’ feeling that makes you understand the root of the phrase ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder.’ Well don’t mistake that for love…that’s just UGA football.

In June, instead of using the weather or politics as a go-to conversation starter, you start talking about Georgia football and our outlook for this season. You ask your boss for several Fridays off in the fall so you can make a few out-of-state away games, and you also verify your Athens hotel rooms that you booked a year in advance.

In July, you audit your tailgating loot, making sure that all your logo-ed products are in working condition. Running through the list, you check off your cooler, chairs, table, tent, grill, generator and RV (if you’re blessed–and many alumni are). If you’re female, you start planning the tailgating menu for the season, leaving the males to plan for adult beverages.

In August, you fantasize about your college days, and wish you were back in school just so you could be on campus when all the excitement surrounding Georgia football starts up. You also debate which bulldog will reign as Uga for the season and what players will sit out the first few games for violations.

In September, you wear a touch of red and black to work every day leading up to the season opener. Even if no one else notices, you know it’s helping your Dawgs. During that one-week countdown, with a skip in your step and a beaming smile plastered across your face, your co-workers wonder what good news you’ve heard lately–job promotion, engagement, baby on the way? You’d love to scream, ‘Hail to the Red & Black,’ but you like your job, and more importantly, you need that job to pay for your mini trips to all the games this season.

And then Game Day arrives. Girls stick Georgia Gs on their cheeks and guys fill up homemade camel packs and find sneaky places for concealment. In their Game Day best, Georgia fans get up at the crack of dawn to begin tailgating, and throughout the day, fill their bellies with all sorts of Southern delectables.

On Game Days, I take advantage of cooking however I want. Bring on the sugar and flour!

Game Day Brownie Pizza

Ingredients

  • 2.5 sticks butter, softened, divided
  • 1 1/3 cups sugar
  • 1/3 cup Kahlua (coffee-flavored liqueur)
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tsp vanilla extract, divided
  • 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2/3 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar

1. In large mixing bowl, blend 1.5 sticks of butter, sugar and Kahlua.

2. Blend in eggs and 2 tsps of vanilla.

3. Blend in flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt.

4. Once mixture is smooth and creamy, fold mini chocolate chips into batter.

5. Grease baking pan. You can use a non-stick cooking spray for this, but we don’t keep any in the house. So when I grease anything, I just pour on some olive oil and spread it around using a paper towel. Works for me!

You’ll notice that I used a throw-away aluminum pan. This way, when it’s time for me to leave the party, I can leave any uneaten pizza with the hostess. Because we all know what happens to desserts that are taken home!

6. Transfer batter to pan and bake at 350 degrees for roughly 14 minutes. Keep an eye on it in case your oven cooks fast. The last thing you want to serve is crunchy pizza.

7. After it’s cooked, let cool while you prepare the toppings.

8. In medium mixing bowl, blend cream cheese, 1 tsp of vanilla and 1 stick of butter.

9. Blend in powdered sugar one cup at a time.

10. Ice pizza using spatula. Then use butter knife to get close to the edge.

11. Decorate your pizza and have it ready for Game Day! (And for all of you out there correcting my grammar, in the South, Game Day is a proper noun.)
