fourth of july holiday staycation

Hope you all had a Happy 4th of July.

We started off the morning with an appropriately red, white and blue “choose your own adventure” WOD at the gym at a bright and early 9 a.m. (To us, this is late since le bebe is an early riser. But to everyone else, kudos for making it to the gym for an early WOD).

The cool temperatures were nice, but it was still quite the workout, as evidenced by my red face and black smudges (thanks to tire flips).

James honored America with a two-hour bike cruise around north Atlanta. Don’t worry, he didn’t take James Michael with him.

Instead, I took JM home for what turned out to be a 3.5-hour nap! I think watching the crazy workout that morning really wore him out, along with his early morning WOD of practicing sitting up by himself. He’s been sitting on our laps for a while now, but we just discovered he could sit up on the floor by himself a few days ago. Little baby is growing up so fast!

After naptime, we headed to the pool for the afternoon, but I didn’t manage to get many pictures. Just imagine a super nice pool with a super cute baby splashing around and getting tons of attention from every adult there. One sweet woman even came up to me and said she had baby envy and just had to come say hi to James Michael.

Here, he’s belting out The Star-Spangled Banner 🙂

Little man had quite the afternoon. We reapplied SPF 50+ on him several times, and even then, I would let him play in the water for 15 minutes or so then we’d sit in the shade for 15 minutes. I know, I’m a super paranoid mama when it comes to the sun and my baby. The good news is, he seems to be developing the coloring of his daddy. Despite the SPF and limited time in the sun, he’s starting to get a little tan. Perfect timing since we’re going to the beach in two weeks!

James Jr. decided to jump in the pool with his Droid and didn’t realize it for 30 minutes or so. So when we got home he decided to stick his phone in a cup full of gluten-free oats, because we don’t keep rice in the house. I’m guessing this trick only works if your phone is submerged in water for several seconds–not 30 minutes. And, I’m not sure oats have quite the same effect as rice.

We took it easy for the fourth–no lake trip or fireworks on the agenda–but the holiday staycation was nice since July 4th fell in the middle of the week. And we did manage to eat well, as usual, with shoulder tenders (James’ new steak cut of choice) and some Sweet Basil Pesto Smoked Chicken and Turkey Sausages from Trader Joe’s. I tried to whip up a fun fruity drink for me to enjoy poolside, but I am a terrible mixologist. And I’m sure it didn’t help that I was using sugar substitutions. Sometimes, you just have to stick with what works. Next time, I’ll try to remember that.

We left the pool at 6:15 p.m., and James Michael fell asleep on the short 5-minute car ride home. He didn’t even wake up when I put on his onesie. He was one tired little baby. The only fireworks he saw were in his dreams.
